“Was it your mother, Matilda, who taught you?” “No, Miss Honey, it wasn’t.”
“마틸다, 엄마가 가르쳐 주셨니?” “아니요, 허니 선생님. 아니에요.”
“You must have a great father then. He must be a brilliant teacher.”
“그럼 아빠가 정말 대단하시겠구나. 아주 훌륭한 선생님이신 모양이네.”
“No, Miss Honey,” Matilda said quietly. “My father did not teach me.”
“아니요, 선생님.” 마틸다가 조용히 말했다. “아빠가 가르쳐 주신 게 아니에요.”
“You mean you taught yourself?” “I don’t quite know,” Matilda said truthfully.
“그럼 스스로 깨우쳤다는 말이니?” “저도 잘 모르겠어요.” 마틸다가 솔직하게 대답했다.
“It’s just that I don’t find it very difficult to multiply one number by another.”
“그저 숫자끼리 곱하는 게 별로 어렵지 않더라고요.”
