“When I was five, my father died very suddenly. One day he was there and the next day he was gone.”

“And so I was left to live alone with my aunt. She became my legal guardian.”

“She had all the powers of a parent over me. And in some way or another, she became the actual owner of the house.”
“이모는 나에 대해 부모로서의 모든 권한을 갖게 되었어. 그리고 어떻게 된 영문인지 집의 실제 소유주가 되었단다.”
“How did your father die?” Matilda asked. “It is interesting you should ask that,” Miss Honey said.
“아버님은 어떻게 돌아가셨어요?” 마틸다가 묻자 허니 선생님이 대답했다. “네가 그걸 묻다니 참 흥미롭구나.”
“I myself was much too young to question it at the time,”
“그 당시 나는 너무 어려서 의문을 품지도 못했어.”
“but I found out later that there was a good deal of mystery surrounding his death.” “Didn't they know how he died?” Matilda asked.
“하지만 나중에야 아버지의 죽음을 둘러싸고 많은 수수께끼가 있었다는 걸 알게 되었단다.” “어떻게 돌아가셨는지 사람들이 몰랐나요?” 마틸다가 물었다.
“Well, not exactly,” Miss Honey said, hesitating, “You see, no one could believe that he would ever have done it.”
“음, 꼭 그런 건 아니지만,” 허니 선생님이 망설이며 말했다. “있잖니, 아버지가 그런 짓을 하셨을 거라고는 아무도 믿지 못했거든.”
“He was such a very sane and sensible man.” “Done what?” Matilda asked. “Killed himself.”
“아버지는 아주 제정신에 분별력이 있는 분이셨으니까.” “무슨 짓을 했다는 말씀이세요?” 마틸다가 묻자 선생님이 대답했다. “스스로 목숨을 끊으셨다는 거 말이야.”
어린아이에게는 매우 충격적인 Killed himself(자살)라는 단어가 직접적으로 언급됩니다. 허니 선생님이 이 이야기를 꺼내기까지 얼마나 큰 용기가 필요했을지 느껴지는군요.
Matilda was stunned. “Did he?” she gasped. “That's what it looked like,” Miss Honey said. “But who knows?”

She shrugged and turned away and stared out of the tiny window.

“I know what you're thinking,” Matilda said. “You're thinking that the aunt killed him”
“선생님이 무슨 생각을 하시는지 알 것 같아요.” 마틸다가 말했다. “이모가 아버님을 죽였다고 생각하시는 거죠?”
마틸다는 어린아이답지 않은 예리한 통찰력으로 허니 선생님이 마음속 깊이 품고 있던 의구심을 단번에 끄집어냅니다.
