There was quite a long silence before she said, “May I tell you a story?”
꽤 오랜 침묵이 흐른 뒤에 선생님이 입을 뗐다. “내가 이야기 하나를 들려줘도 되겠니?”
“Of course,” Matilda said. “I am twenty-three years old,” Miss Honey said, “and when I was born my father was a doctor in this village.”
“그럼요,” 마틸다가 대답했다. “나는 지금 스물세 살이란다,” 허니 선생님이 말했다. “내가 태어났을 때 아버지는 이 마을의 의사였어.”
여기서부터 허니 선생님의 과거 이야기가 본격적으로 시작됩니다. 선생님의 현재 모습이 왜 이렇게 되었는지 알 수 있는 중요한 대목입니다.
“We had a nice old house, quite large, red-brick. It's tucked away in the woods behind the hills. I don't think you'd know it.”
“빨간 벽돌로 지은 꽤 크고 멋진 오래된 집이었단다. 언덕 너머 숲속에 숨어 있는 집이라 너는 아마 모를 거야.”
Matilda kept silent. “I was born there,” Miss Honey said. “And then came the first tragedy.”
마틸다는 침묵을 지켰다. “나는 그곳에서 태어났어,” 허니 선생님이 말했다. “그러고 나서 첫 번째 비극이 찾아왔지.”
“My mother died when I was two. My father, a busy doctor, had to have someone to run the house and to look after me.”
“내가 두 살 때 어머니가 돌아가셨단다. 바쁜 의사였던 아버지는 살림을 도맡아 하고 나를 돌봐줄 사람이 필요했어.”
“So he invited my mother's unmarried sister, my aunt, to come and live with us. She agreed and she came.”
“그래서 결혼하지 않은 어머니의 여동생, 그러니까 이모를 우리 집에 와서 같이 살자고 초대했지. 이모는 승낙했고 우리 집으로 왔단다.”
여기서 aunt는 허니 선생님의 어머니 쪽 형제이므로 한국어로는 이모라고 번역하는 것이 적절합니다. 당시 영국 중산층 가정에서는 가족 중 한 명을 데려와 살림을 돕게 하는 일이 흔했습니다.
Matilda was listening intently. “How old was the aunt when she moved in?” she asked.
마틸다는 집중해서 듣고 있었다. “이모님이 이사 오셨을 때 연세가 어떻게 되셨어요?” 마틸다가 물었다.
“Not very old,” Miss Honey said. “I should say about thirty.”
“그렇게 많지는 않았단다,” 허니 선생님이 대답했다. “서른 살쯤이었을 거야.”
“But I hated her right from the start. I missed my mother terribly. And the aunt was not a kind person.”
“하지만 나는 처음부터 이모가 싫었어. 어머니가 너무나 그리웠거든. 게다가 이모는 친절한 사람이 아니었단다.”
“My father didn't know that because he was hardly ever around but when he did put in an appearance, the aunt behaved differently.”
“아버지는 그걸 모르셨어. 아버지는 집에 거의 계시지 않았고, 어쩌다 얼굴을 비추실 때면 이모가 싹 달라졌거든.”
Miss Honey paused and sipped her tea. “I can't think why I am telling you all this,” she said, embarrassed.
허니 선생님은 말을 멈추고 차를 한 모금 마셨다. “왜 너에게 이런 이야기를 다 하고 있는지 모르겠구나,” 선생님이 쑥스러운 듯 말했다.
“Go on,” Matilda said. “Please.” “Well,” Miss Honey said, “then came the second tragedy.”
“계속해 주세요,” 마틸다가 말했다. “부탁이에요.” “그래,” 허니 선생님이 대답했다. “그다음 두 번째 비극이 찾아왔어.”
