“I think not,” Miss Honey said. “The Headmistress simply got a little over-excited, that's all.”
“그렇지 않을 거란다,” 허니 선생님이 말했다. “교장 선생님이 그냥 좀 흥분하신 것뿐이야.”
“Good,” Matilda said. “But that isn't what I want to talk to you about.”
“다행이네요,” 마틸다가 말했다. “하지만 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 건 그게 아니에요.”
“What do you want to talk to me about, Matilda?” “I want to talk to you about the glass of water with the creature in it,” Matilda said.
“나에게 무슨 말을 하고 싶은 거니, 마틸다?” “그 생물이 들어있던 물잔에 대해 말씀드리고 싶어서요,” 마틸다가 말했다.
“You saw it spilling all over Miss Trunchbull, didn't you?”
“선생님도 그 물이 트런치불 교장 선생님한테 쏟아지는 거 보셨죠?”
“I did indeed.” “Well, Miss Honey, I didn't touch it. I never went near it.”
“암, 보고말고.” “그런데 선생님, 저 그 잔에 손도 안 댔어요. 가까이 가지도 않았고요.”
“I know you didn't,” Miss Honey said. “You heard me telling the Headmistress that it couldn't possibly have been you.”
“네가 안 그랬다는 건 나도 안단다,” 허니 선생님이 말했다. “내가 교장 선생님께 너일 리가 없다고 말씀드리는 것도 들었잖니.”
“Ah, but it was me, Miss Honey,” Matilda said. “That's exactly what I want to talk to you about.”
“아, 하지만 선생님, 그거 제가 한 거 맞아요,” 마틸다가 말했다. “제가 말씀드리고 싶은 게 바로 그거예요.”
Miss Honey paused and looked carefully at the child. “I don't think I quite follow you,” she said.
허니 선생님은 잠시 말을 멈추고 아이를 유심히 살펴보았다. “선생님이 네 말을 잘 이해하지 못하겠구나,” 선생님이 말했다.
Follow는 여기선 상대방의 말이나 논리를 이해하다 혹은 따라가다라는 뜻으로 쓰였습니다.
“I got so angry at being accused of something I hadn't done that I made it happen.”
“하지도 않은 일로 의심을 받으니까 너무 화가 나서, 제가 그렇게 되도록 만들었어요.”
“You made what happen, Matilda?” “I made the glass tip over.” “I still don't quite understand what you mean,” Miss Honey said gently.
“무엇을 만들었다는 거니, 마틸다?” “제가 유리잔을 넘어뜨렸어요.” “선생님은 아직도 네가 무슨 말을 하는 건지 이해가 잘 안 가는구나,” 허니 선생님이 다정하게 말했다.
“I did it with my eyes,” Matilda said. “I was staring at it and wishing it to tip”
“눈으로 했어요,” 마틸다가 말했다. “유리잔을 뚫어지게 쳐다보면서 넘어지기를 바랐거든요.”
“and then my eyes went all hot and funny and some sort of power came out of them and the glass just toppled over.”
“그러자 눈이 아주 뜨거워지면서 묘한 기분이 들더니, 눈에서 어떤 힘이 뿜어져 나와서 유리잔이 그냥 넘어져 버렸어요.”
