아우슈비츠(Auschwitz)는 나치가 세운 가장 악명 높은 수용소로, 당시 사람들에게 이곳은 곧 죽음과 같은 의미였습니다. 이곳의 이름을 확인한 승객들의 비명은 그들이 맞닥뜨린 가혹한 운명에 대한 절망적인 반응이라고 볼 수 있습니다.
Everyone’s heart missed a beat at that moment. Auschwitz—the very name stood for all that was horrible: gas chambers, crematoriums, massacres.

기차는 승객들이 이 끔찍한 현실을 깨닫는 순간을 조금이라도 늦춰주려는 듯, 천천히, 주저하듯이 움직여 아우슈비츠로 향했다.
