And a third express train passed them. “Do they want to catch the first travellers?” asked the little prince.
세 번째 특급열차가 번쩍이며 지나갔어요. “먼저 간 사람들을 쫓아가려는 건가요?” 어린 왕자가 물었죠.
“They don’t want to catch anybody,” said the man. “They’re sleeping or they’re looking outside the windows.
“아무도 쫓아가지 않아.” 신호지기가 대답했어요. “기차 안 사람들은 잠을 자거나 아니면 창밖을 멍하니 내다보고 있을 뿐이지.”
Only the children are pressing their noses against the windows.”
“오직 아이들만이 창문에 코를 바짝 대고 밖을 내다보고 있단다.”
목적지도 모른 채 무의미한 이동을 반복하며 잠에 취해 있는 어른들과 달리, 매 순간 세상을 호기심 어린 눈으로 바라보는 아이들의 순수함이 극명한 대비를 이룹니다.
“Only the children know what they are looking for,” said the little prince.
“오직 아이들만이 자신들이 무엇을 찾고 있는지 알고 있네요.” 어린 왕자가 말했어요.
“They use their time to play with toys, and the toys become very important to them.
“아이들은 인형 하나를 가지고 노는 데 온 정성을 다하고, 그 인형은 아이들에게 아주 소중한 존재가 되잖아요.”
And if anybody takes the toys away from them, they cry.” “They’re lucky,” the man said.
“그래서 누군가 그 인형을 뺏어가면 아이들은 울어버리는 거고요.” “아이들은 참 운이 좋구나.” 신호지기가 말했답니다.
The little prince continued on his journey. “Good morning,” said the little prince when he met a businessman.
어린 왕자는 다시 여행을 계속했어요. 그러다 갈증을 해소해 주는 알약을 파는 한 장사꾼을 만났답니다. “안녕하세요.” 어린 왕자가 인사했어요.
앞서 만난 신호지기에 이어, 효율성만을 극단적으로 추구하며 삶의 과정을 생략하려는 현대인의 모습을 풍자하는 장사꾼이 새롭게 등장합니다.
“Good morning,” said the businessman. He was a businessman who sold pills which helped you when you were thirsty.
“안녕.” 장사꾼이 대답했어요. 그는 일주일에 한 알만 먹으면 전혀 갈증을 느끼지 않게 되는 알약을 파는 사람이었죠.
If you swallowed one pill a week, you wouldn’t feel any need to drink.
일주일에 단 한 알만 삼키면 아무것도 마실 필요가 없게 된다는 것이었어요.
“Why are you selling these pills?” asked the little prince.
“이런 알약을 왜 파는 건가요?” 어린 왕자가 물었어요.
“Because they save a lot of time,” said the businessman.
“시간을 엄청나게 아껴주기 때문이지.” 장사꾼이 설명했어요.
“Experts calculated that these pills can save fifty-three minutes a week.”
“전문가들이 계산해 본 결과, 이 알약을 먹으면 일주일에 53분이나 아낄 수 있다는구나.”
