CHAPTER I – HAT
제1장 – 모자
When I was six years old, I saw a picture in a book.
내가 여섯 살이었을 때, 책에서 멋진 그림 하나를 본 적이 있어요.
여기서부터는 화자인 주인공이 과거를 회상하며 여섯 살 시절의 이야기를 시작합니다.
It was a picture of a snake who was eating a big animal. Here is a copy of the picture.
그건 커다란 동물을 삼키고 있는 보아뱀의 그림이었죠. 여기 그 그림을 그대로 옮겨 보았답니다.

In the book it said, “Snakes eat the whole animal. Then they are not able to move. And they sleep for six months.”
그 책에는 이렇게 적혀 있었어요. “보아뱀은 먹이를 씹지도 않고 통째로 삼켜버립니다. 그러고 나면 몸을 움직일 수 없게 되어, 소화가 되는 여섯 달 동안 잠을 잡니다.”
I thought about the life in the jungle. Then I made my first picture. This is my picture number one.
나는 밀림 속에서 일어나는 신비로운 일들을 곰곰이 생각해보았어요. 그러고 나서 제 생애 첫 번째 그림을 그려냈죠. 그게 바로 내 그림 제1호예요.

I showed my fantastic picture to the adults. And I asked them if my picture scared them.
나는 이 멋진 작품을 어른들에게 보여주며, 내 그림이 무섭지 않으냐고 물어보았어요.
But they answered, “How can I be scared of a hat?”
하지만 어른들은 이렇게 대답했죠. “모자가 왜 무섭다는 거니?”
My picture was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a big snake who ate an elephant.
내 그림은 모자가 아니었어요. 코끼리를 소화시키고 있는 보아뱀이었거든요.
I then drew the inside of the big snake, so that the adults could understand.
그래서 나는 어른들이 이해할 수 있도록 보아뱀의 속을 그렸어요.
They always need explanations. This is my picture number two.
어른들에겐 항상 설명을 해줘야 하니까요. 이게 내 그림 제2호랍니다.
