“and have all kinds of responsibilities thrust upon him.”

“That is how life will be, both at work and at home, and in any role he assumes in public life.”

“차별이나 전쟁, 불평등 같은 문제들을 더 이상 무시할 수 없게 된다는 말입니다. 제 말이 틀렸나요?”

YOUTH: “Well, if we were still living at a time when religion held sway,”
청년: “글쎄요, 만약 우리가 여전히 종교가 지배하던 시대에 살고 있다면,”
청년이 개인의 문제를 넘어 시대적 배경으로 논의의 폭을 넓히고 있습니다. 과거의 종교적 권위가 사라진 현대 사회의 공허함을 짚어내며 철학자를 압박하는 모습이군요.
“salvation might be an option because the teachings of the divine were everything to us.”
“신의 가르침이 우리 삶의 전부였을 테니 구원이란 것도 선택지에 있었을지 모릅니다.”
“All we had to do was obey them and consequently have little to think about.”
“그저 가르침에 순종하기만 하면 됐고, 고민할 일도 별로 없었을 테니까요.”
“But religion has lost its power and now there is no real belief in God.”
“하지만 종교는 힘을 잃었고 이제 신을 진심으로 믿는 사람은 없습니다.”
“With nothing to rely on, everyone is filled with anxiety and doubt. Everyone is living for themselves.”
