YOUTH: “Yes, absolutely. That’s quite possible.” PHILOSOPHER: “When that happens, if you are thinking of school as being everything to you,”
청년: “네, 전적으로 동감합니다. 충분히 그럴 수 있죠.” 철학자: “그럴 때 학교를 자신의 전부라고 생각하고 있다면,”
“you will end up without a sense of belonging to anything.”
“결국 그 어디에도 소속되지 못했다는 결론에 이르고 맙니다.”
“And then, you will escape within a smaller community, such as your home.”
“그렇게 되면 결국 집 같은 더 작은 공동체 안으로 도피하게 되겠지요.”
“You will shut yourself in, and maybe even turn to violence against members of your own family.”
“방 안에 틀어박히거나, 심지어 가족에게 폭력을 휘두르는 경우도 생길 수 있습니다.”
“And by doing such things, you will be attempting to gain a sense of belonging somehow.”
“그렇게 해서라도 어떻게든 소속감을 얻으려고 발버둥 치는 것이지요.”
“What I would like you to focus on here, though, is that there is ‘a more separate community’ and, moreover, that there is ‘a larger community.’”
“하지만 여기서 당신이 주목했으면 하는 점은 ‘더 넓은 별개의 공동체’가, 나아가 ‘더 큰 공동체’가 존재한다는 사실입니다.”
larger community(더 큰 공동체)는 아들러 심리학에서 시야를 확장할 것을 권하는 핵심 개념입니다. 내가 속한 작은 집단에서의 고립이나 갈등이 인생 전체의 파멸이 아님을 역설하고 있습니다.
YOUTH: “What does that mean?” PHILOSOPHER: “That there is a larger world that extends far beyond the confines of the school.”
청년: “그게 무슨 뜻이죠?” 철학자: “학교라는 좁은 틀을 훨씬 벗어난 곳에 더 넓은 세상이 있다는 뜻입니다.”
“And every one of us is a member of that world. If there is no place of refuge in your school,”
“우리 모두는 그 세상의 일원이에요. 만약 학교 안에 당신이 있을 곳이 없다면,”
“you should find a different refuge outside the walls of the school.”

“You can change schools, and it’s fine to withdraw from school, too.”

“A community that you can break relations with by simply submitting a withdrawal notice is one”
“자퇴 서류 한 장으로 인연을 끊을 수 있는 공동체라면,”
“that you can have only so much connection to, in any case.”
“애초에 그 정도의 연결 고리밖에 없는 곳입니다.”
