“all of us belong to the community of the earth, and the community of the universe.”
“우리 모두가 지구라는 공동체, 우주라는 공동체에 속해 있지요.”
YOUTH: “That’s pure sophistry! To suddenly come out with ‘You belong to the universe,’ as if that could give someone a sense of belonging.”
청년: “그건 명백한 궤변입니다! 갑자기 ‘당신은 우주에 속해 있다’라고 한다고 해서 소속감이 생길 리가 없지 않습니까.”
sophistry(궤변)는 겉으로는 그럴듯하지만 실제로는 이치에 맞지 않는 말을 뜻합니다. 청년은 우주적 공동체라는 개념이 현실 도피처럼 느껴지는 모양입니다.
PHILOSOPHER: “It’s true, there’s no way one can just imagine the entire universe all of a sudden.”
철학자: “사실 우주 전체를 갑자기 머릿속에 그리는 건 불가능한 일이지요.”
“Even so, I would like you to gain the awareness that you belong to a separate, larger community”
“그렇더라도 눈앞에 보이는 작은 공동체 너머에 존재하는 더 크고 별개의 공동체에,”
“that is beyond the one you see in your immediate vicinity—for example, the country or local society in which you live—”
“가령 국가나 지역 사회를 넘어선 곳에 자신이 속해 있다는 사실을 인식해주었으면 합니다.”
“and that you are contributing in some way within that community.”
“그리고 그 공동체 안에서 어떤 식으로든 공헌하고 있다는 사실을요.”
YOUTH: “Then what about in a situation like this? Say there’s a guy who’s unmarried, who has lost his job and his friends,”
청년: “그럼 이런 상황은 어떤가요? 가령 결혼도 안 하고 직장과 친구도 잃은 남자가 있다고 칩시다.”
“and who avoids the company of other people and just lives off the money his parents left him.”
“사람들과의 만남을 피하고 부모님이 남겨주신 돈으로만 생활하고 있어요.”
“So he’s basically running away from all the tasks of work and tasks of friendship and tasks of love.”
“일과 친구, 사랑이라는 인생의 모든 과제로부터 도망치고 있는 셈이죠.”
“Would you say that even a guy like that belongs to some sort of community?”
“그런 사람조차 어떤 공동체에 속해 있다고 할 수 있습니까?”
PHILOSOPHER: “Of course. Say he goes out to buy a loaf of bread. He pays for it with a coin.”
철학자: “물론입니다. 그가 빵 한 덩이를 사러 나갔다고 해보죠. 그는 동전 한 닢을 지불합니다.”
유명한 빵 한 덩이 예시입니다. 내가 무언가를 소비하는 행위 자체가 보이지 않는 수많은 타인과 연결되어 있음을 증명하는 아들러식 논리입니다.
“That coin does not simply go back to the bakers of the bread.”
“그 동전은 단순히 빵집 주인에게 돌아가는 것으로 끝나지 않아요.”
