The three men went out of the door. As they went through the barn the horses snorted and the halter chains rattled.

Crooks sat on his bunk and looked at the door for a moment, and then he reached for the liniment bottle.
크룩스는 침대에 앉아 잠시 문 쪽을 바라보더니 바르는 약병으로 손을 뻗었다.
He pulled out his shirt in back, poured a little liniment in his pink palm and, reaching around, he fell slowly to rubbing his back.
그는 셔츠 뒷자락을 걷어 올리고 분홍빛 손바닥에 약을 조금 따른 뒤, 손을 뒤로 뻗어 천천히 등을 문지르기 시작했다.
이야기의 시작 부분에서 홀로 등을 문지르던 크룩스의 모습으로 다시 돌아왔습니다. 잠시 소란스러웠던 방에 다시 정적이 찾아오고, 그의 변함없는 고독과 신체적 고통만이 남았음을 시사합니다.

제5장
제5장이 시작됩니다. 모든 일꾼이 밖에서 게임을 즐기며 소란스러운 일요일 오후, 마구간 안의 정적 속에서 비극적인 사건이 싹트기 시작합니다.
ONE end of the great barn was piled high with new hay and over the pile hung the four-taloned jackson fork suspended from its pulley.
거대한 마구간의 한쪽 끝에는 갓 벤 건초가 높이 쌓여 있었고, 그 더미 위로는 도르래에 매달린 네 갈래 갈고리가 달린 잭슨 포크가 걸려 있었다.
jackson fork는 건초 더미를 옮길 때 사용하는 커다란 갈고리 기구입니다.
The hay came down like a mountain slope to the other end of the barn, and there was a level place as yet unfilled with the new crop.
건초는 산비탈처럼 마구간 반대편 끝까지 비스듬히 내려와 있었으며, 그 끝에는 아직 새 수확물을 채우지 않은 평평한 공간이 있었다.
At the sides the feeding racks were visible, and between the slats the heads of horses could be seen. It was Sunday afternoon.
양옆으로는 먹이통이 보였고, 칸막이 살대 사이로 말들의 머리가 보였다. 일요일 오후였다.
The resting horses nibbled the remaining wisps of hay,
쉬고 있는 말들은 남은 건초 부스러기를 조금씩 씹어 먹었다.
and they stamped their feet and they bit the wood of the mangers and rattled the halter chains.
말들은 발을 구르기도 하고 구유의 나무 부분을 갉아먹기도 했으며, 굴레 사슬을 찰랑거리기도 했다.
The afternoon sun sliced in through the cracks of the barn walls and lay in bright lines on the hay.
오후의 햇살이 마구간 벽의 틈새를 뚫고 들어와 건초 위에 밝은 선들을 그어 놓았다.
There was the buzz of flies in the air, the lazy afternoon humming.
공중에는 파리들이 윙윙거렸고, 나른한 오후의 웅성거림이 감돌았다.
From outside came the clang of horseshoes on the playing peg and the shouts of men, playing, encouraging, jeering.
밖에서는 편자 던지기용 말뚝에 편자가 부딪히는 소리와 함께 게임을 즐기며 응원하거나 비웃는 사람들의 함성이 들려왔다.
