제1장
존 스타인벡의 대표작 생쥐와 인간의 막이 오릅니다. 1930년대 미국 대공황기, 캘리포니아의 살리나스 강가를 배경으로 두 남자의 여정이 시작됩니다.
A FEW MILES south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green.
솔레다드에서 남쪽으로 몇 마일 내려가면, 살리나스 강이 산기슭 기슭으로 바짝 다가와 깊고 푸른 물결을 이루며 흐른다.
The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool.
물 또한 따뜻하다. 좁은 웅덩이에 이르기 전 햇살을 받으며 노란 모래 위를 반짝이며 흘러왔기 때문이다.
On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan mountains,
강의 한쪽으로는 황금빛 기슭의 경사면이 견고하고 바위투성이인 가빌란 산맥을 향해 굽이쳐 올라간다.
but on the valley side the water is lined with trees—willows fresh and green with every spring,
하지만 계곡 쪽 물가에는 나무들이 줄지어 서 있다. 봄마다 싱그럽고 푸른 버드나무들이 우거지며,
carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter’s flooding;
가지 낮은 쪽 잎사귀 사이사이에 겨울철 홍수가 남기고 간 부스러기들을 품고 있다.
and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool.
그리고 얼룩덜룩하고 하얀 줄기가 비스듬히 뻗어 나와 웅덩이 위로 아치를 그리는 플라타너스 나무들이 서 있다.
On the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them.
나무 아래 모래 제방 위에는 잎사귀들이 깊게 쌓여 아주 바스락거린다. 도마뱀이라도 그 사이를 달리면 요란한 소리가 날 정도다.
Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening, and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of ’coons,
저녁이면 토끼들이 덤불에서 나와 모래 위에 앉아 있고, 축축한 평지는 너구리들의 밤 자국으로 가득 찬다.
and with the spread pads of dogs from the ranches, and with the split-wedge tracks of deer that come to drink in the dark.
또한 인근 농장에서 온 개들의 넓적한 발자국과 어둠 속에서 물을 마시러 온 사슴들의 쐐기 모양 발자국들도 섞여 있다.
There is a path through the willows and among the sycamores, a path beaten hard by boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool,
버드나무와 플라타너스 숲 사이로는 길이 하나 나 있다. 농장에서 내려와 깊은 웅덩이에서 수영을 즐기는 아이들이 밟아 다져진 길이다.
and beaten hard by tramps who come wearily down from the highway in the evening to jungle-up near water.
또한 저녁 무렵 고속도로에서 지친 몸을 이끌고 내려와 물가 근처에서 노숙하려는 부랑자들이 밟아 단단해진 길이기도 하다.
당시 일자리를 찾아 떠돌던 뜨내기 노동자들이 강가에 모여 임시 숙영지를 꾸리는 것을 jungle-up이라고 불렀습니다. 고단한 하루를 마무리하는 그들만의 방식이었던 셈이죠.
