THE SAME DAY
같은 날
오전에 쓴 일기에 이어, 같은 날 오후에 추가로 기록한 내용입니다.
There's something happening every day. This morning Mr. van Hoeven was arrested. He was hiding two Jews in his house.
매일같이 무슨 일이 터지네. 오늘 아침엔 반 후벤 씨가 체포되셨어. 자기 집에 유대인 두 명을 숨겨주고 계셨대.
Mr. van Hoeven(반 후벤 씨)은 은신처 식구들에게 채소와 감자를 조달해 주던 아주 중요한 조력자였습니다.
It's a heavy blow for us, not only because those poor Jews are once again balancing on the edge of an abyss,
이건 우리에게도 큰 충격이야. 불쌍한 유대인들이 다시 한번 벼랑 끝으로 내몰렸기 때문만이 아니라,
but also because it's terrible for Mr. van Hoeven. The world's been turned upside down.
반 후벤 씨에게 닥친 일도 너무 끔찍하니까 말이야. 세상이 정말 거꾸로 돌아가고 있어.
The most decent people are being sent to concentration camps, prisons and lonely cells,

while the lowest of the low rule over young and old, rich and poor.
가장 비열한 인간들이 남녀노소와 빈부귀천을 가리지 않고 세상을 휘두르고 있거든.
One gets caught for black marketeering, another for hiding Jews or other unfortunate souls.
누군가는 암거래를 하다 잡히고, 누군가는 유대인이나 다른 가련한 영혼들을 숨겨주다 붙잡히지.
Unless you're a Nazi, you don't know what's going to happen to you from one day to the next.
나치가 아닌 이상, 내일 당장 자신에게 무슨 일이 닥칠지 아무도 모르는 세상이야.
Mr. van Hoeven is a great loss to us too. Bep can't possibly lug such huge amounts of potatoes all the way here,
반 후벤 씨가 없으면 우리도 큰일이야. 벱 언니가 그 많은 감자 자루를 여기까지 혼자서 다 짊어지고 올 수는 없잖아.
조력자의 체포는 인도적인 안타까움을 넘어 은신처의 실질적인 식량 조달 체계가 무너졌음을 의미하는 아주 위급한 상황입니다.
