앞선 기록 이후 약 한 달이라는 시간이 흘렀습니다. 은신처에 새로운 식구들이 합류한 뒤에 쓴 첫 일기이기도 하죠.
Dear Kitty, I've deserted you for an entire month, but so little has happened that I can't find a newsworthy item to relate every single day.
사랑하는 키티, 한 달 동안이나 소식을 전하지 못했네. 그동안 별다른 일이 없어서 매일매일 너에게 들려줄 만한 이야깃거리를 찾지 못했거든.
The van Daans arrived on July 13. We thought they were coming on the fourteenth,
반 단 가족은 7월 13일에 도착했어. 우린 14일에 올 줄 알았는데 말이야.
van Daans(반 단 가족)는 프랑크 가족과 은신 생활을 함께할 사람들입니다. 실제 성은 판 펠스(van Pels)이지만 안네는 일기에서 가명을 사용했습니다.
but from the thirteenth to sixteenth the Germans were sending out call-up notices right and left and causing a lot of unrest,
그런데 13일부터 16일 사이에 독일군이 여기저기 소환장을 보내는 바람에 다들 엄청 불안해했어.
so they decided it would be safer to leave a day too early than a day too late.
그래서 하루 늦게 오는 것보다는 차라리 하루 일찍 오는 게 안전하겠다고 판단한 거지.
Peter van Daan arrived at nine-thirty in the morning (while we were still at breakfast).
페터 반 단은 아침 9시 반에 도착했어. 우리가 아직 아침을 먹고 있을 때였지.
가족들보다 조금 일찍 은신처에 들어온 페터가 아침 식사 중인 프랑크 가족과 처음 마주하는 장면입니다.
Peter's going on sixteen, a shy, awkward boy whose company won't amount to much.
페터는 이제 곧 열여섯 살인데, 수줍음 많고 어수룩한 소년이라 같이 있어도 별로 재미있을 것 같지는 않아.
Mr. and Mrs. van Daan came half an hour later. Much to our amusement, Mrs. van Daan was carrying a hatbox with a large chamber pot inside.
30분 뒤에 반 단 부부가 왔어. 정말 웃겼던 게, 반 단 아주머니가 커다란 요강이 들어있는 모자 상자를 들고 오셨지 뭐야.
chamber pot(요강)은 당시 은신처의 열악한 환경을 보여주는 물건입니다. 낮 동안에는 아래층 사람들의 눈을 피해 화장실 사용을 극도로 자제해야 했기 때문에 각자 방에 요강을 두고 지내야 했죠.
“I just don't feel at home without my chamber pot,” she exclaimed, and it was the first item to find a permanent place under the divan.
“이 요강 없이는 어디서도 마음이 편안하지가 않아서요.” 아주머니가 외치셨고, 그 요강은 소파 아래에 가장 먼저 자리를 잡은 물건이 됐어.
Instead of a chamber pot, Mr. van D. was lugging a collapsible tea table under his arm.
아주머니가 요강을 챙겨온 반면, 반 단 아저씨는 겨드랑이에 접이식 찻상을 끼고 낑낑대며 들어오셨어.
From the first, we ate our meals together, and after three days it felt as if the seven of us had become one big family.
우린 처음부터 식사를 같이했어. 사흘쯤 지나니까 우리 일곱 명이 마치 한 가족처럼 느껴지더라.
