That night my father came out to the garage with a cardboard tube and a flashlight.
그날 밤 아버지는 종이 튜브와 손전등을 들고 차고로 나오셨다.
He taped the two together so that the light beam was forced straight out the tube.
아버지는 빛이 튜브 밖으로 일직선으로 뻗어 나가도록 두 물건을 테이프로 감아 붙이셨다.
“Let me show you how to candle an egg,” he said, then switched off the garage light.
“검란하는 법을 보여주마.” 아버지가 말씀하시고는 차고 불을 끄셨다.
candle은 명사로 양초이지만, 여기서는 동사로 쓰여 알의 내부를 빛에 비추어 발육 상태를 확인하는 검란하다라는 뜻으로 쓰였습니다.
I’d seen a section on candling eggs in Mrs. Brubeck’s book, but I hadn’t really read it yet.
브루벡 선생님이 주신 책에서 검란에 관한 내용을 본 적은 있었지만, 아직 제대로 읽어보지는 않은 상태였다.
“Why do they call it that?” I asked him. “And why do you do it?”
“왜 검란이라고 불러요? 그리고 왜 그렇게 하는 거예요?” 내가 여쭈었다.
“People used candles to do this before they had incandescent lighting.” He held an egg up to the cardboard tube.
“백열전등이 생기기 전에는 사람들이 촛불을 사용해서 이 작업을 했거든.” 아버지는 종이 튜브에 달걀을 갖다 대셨다.
“The light lets you see through the shell so you can watch the embryo develop. Then you can cull the weak ones, if necessary.”
“빛이 껍질을 투과하기 때문에 배아가 발달하는 걸 관찰할 수 있단다. 그러고 나서 필요하다면 약한 것들은 골라낼 수 있지.”
cull은 전체 무리의 건강한 발전을 위해 성장이 더디거나 문제가 있는 개체를 따로 골라내다 혹은 솎아내다라는 뜻을 가진 단어입니다.
“Kill them?” “Cull them. Remove the ones that don’t develop properly.” “But… wouldn’t that also kill them?”
“죽인다는 말씀이세요?” “솎아내는 거야. 제대로 발달하지 못한 것들을 제거하는 거지.” “하지만... 그것도 결국 죽이는 거잖아요?”
He looked at me. “Leaving an egg you should cull might have disastrous results on the healthy ones.”
아버지가 나를 보셨다. “골라내야 할 알을 그대로 두면 건강한 알들에게 재앙과도 같은 결과를 초래할 수 있단다.”
“Why? Wouldn’t it just not hatch?” He went back to lighting up the egg.
“왜요? 그냥 부화하지 않는 것뿐이잖아요?” 아버지는 다시 달걀에 빛을 비추기 시작하셨다.
“It might explode and contaminate the other eggs with bacteria.”
“알이 터져서 다른 달걀들까지 박테리아로 오염시킬 수도 있거든.”
상한 알 내부에서 박테리아가 번식하며 가스가 발생하면 실제로 알이 폭발하듯 터지는 경우가 있습니다. 이를 방지하기 위해 검란을 통해 죽은 배아를 골라내는 것이 중요합니다.
