“I’m sorry it’s taken me over a year to come introduce myself. I’m Chester Duncan, Bryce’s grandfather.

so I took off my work glove and watched my hand completely disappear inside his as we shook.
나는 작업 장갑을 벗고 할아버지와 악수를 나누었다. 내 손이 할아버지의 커다란 손안으로 완전히 사라지는 광경을 지켜보면서 말이다.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Duncan,” I said, thinking that this man was way bigger than he looked from the sitting-room window.
“만나서 반가워요, 던컨 씨.” 나는 거실 창문 너머로 보던 것보다 할아버지가 훨씬 풍채가 좋으시다고 생각하며 대답했다.
Then the strangest thing happened. He pulled his own work gloves and a pair of clippers from a back pocket and said,
그때 정말 이상한 일이 벌어졌다. 할아버지가 뒷주머니에서 작업 장갑과 전정 가위를 꺼내시더니 이렇게 말씀하시는 게 아닌가.
“Are you pruning all of these to the same height?”
“이걸 전부 같은 높이로 다듬으려는 거니?”
“Oh,” I said. “Well, yes. That is what I was thinking. Although now I don’t know.
“아,” 내가 대답했다. “음, 네. 그렇게 하려고 생각 중이었어요. 그런데 지금은 잘 모르겠네요.”
Do you think it would look better to just take them out?”
“그냥 아예 뽑아버리는 게 더 나아 보일까요?”
He shook his head and said, “They’re Australian tea shrubs. They’ll prune up nicely.”
할아버지는 고개를 저으며 말씀하셨다. “이건 호주산 티트리 관목이란다. 다듬어 놓으면 아주 근사해질 거야.”
Australian tea shrubs는 호주가 원산지인 티트리(Tea Tree) 관목을 말합니다. 잎에서 추출한 오일이 피부 진정 효과로 유명하죠.
And with that, he put on his gloves and started clipping.
그러고는 장갑을 끼고 가지를 치기 시작하셨다.
At first I didn’t know what to say to this man. It was very strange to be getting his help,
처음에는 이분에게 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰랐다. 할아버지의 도움을 받는다는 게 무척 생경하게 느껴졌다.
but from the way he was acting, it was as though I shouldn’t have thought a thing of it.
하지만 할아버지의 태도가 워낙 자연스러워서, 나 또한 이를 대수롭지 않게 여겨야 할 것만 같았다.
