Charlotte decided to use her dry thread for writing the new message.
샬롯은 새로운 메시지를 쓰는 데 마른 실을 사용하기로 마음먹었어요.
“If I write the word ‘Terrific’ with sticky thread,” she thought,
‘만약 끈적끈적한 실로 “대단해”라고 쓰면,’ 샬롯은 생각했어요.
“every bug that comes along will get stuck in it and spoil the effect.”
‘지나가는 벌레들이 글자에 다 들러붙어서 글자가 엉망이 되어버릴 거야.’
“Now let’s see, the first letter is T.” Charlotte climbed to a point at the top of the left hand side of the web.
“자, 어디 보자, 첫 글자는 T야.” 샬롯은 거미줄 왼쪽 윗부분으로 기어 올라갔어요.
Swinging her spinnerets into position, she attached her thread and then dropped down.
실젖을 제 위치에 맞추고 실을 고정한 다음 아래로 툭 떨어졌지요.
As she dropped, her spinning tubes went into action and she let out thread.
아래로 내려가면서 샬롯의 방적관이 작동해 실이 술술 풀려 나왔어요.
spinning tubes(방적관)는 거미의 실젖 안에 있는 미세한 구멍들로, 여기서 실이 실제로 뽑아져 나옵니다.
At the bottom, she attached the thread. This formed the upright part of the letter T.
바닥까지 내려와 실을 고정하자 글자 T의 세로 기둥이 만들어졌답니다.
Charlotte was not satisfied, however. She climbed up and made another attachment, right next to the first.
하지만 샬롯은 만족하지 않았어요. 다시 기어 올라가서 처음 고정한 곳 바로 옆에 실을 하나 더 붙였지요.
Then she carried the line down, so that she had a double line instead of a single line.
그러고는 다시 아래로 실을 끌고 내려와서 가느다란 한 줄 대신 튼튼한 두 줄로 만들었답니다.
“It will show up better if I make the whole thing with double lines.”
“두 줄로 만들면 글자가 훨씬 더 잘 보일 거야.”
She climbed back up, moved over about an inch to the left, touched her spinnerets to the web,
샬롯은 다시 위로 올라가 왼쪽으로 1인치쯤 자리를 옮겼어요. 그러고는 실젖을 거미줄에 대고,
and then carried a line across to the right, forming the top of the T.
오른쪽으로 쭉 실을 끌어당겨 T의 윗부분을 만들었지요.
