“Well, I don't really know yet,” said Mr. Zuckerman. “But we have received a sign, Edith—a mysterious sign.

A miracle has happened on this farm. There is a large spider's web in the doorway of the barn cellar,
“우리 농장에 기적이 일어난 거예요. 외양간 지하실 문간에 커다란 거미줄이 쳐져 있는데,”
right over the pigpen, and when Lurvy went to feed the pig this morning, he noticed the web because it was foggy,
“그게 바로 돼지우리 위에 있거든요. 오늘 아침 러비가 돼지 먹이를 주러 갔다가 안개 덕분에 그 거미줄을 발견했대요.”
and you know how a spider's web looks very distinct in a fog. And right spang in the middle of the web there were the words ‘Some Pig.’
“안개가 끼면 거미줄이 아주 또렷하게 보이잖아요. 그런데 거미줄 한복판에 ‘대단한 돼지’라는 글자가 선명하게 새겨져 있더라고요.”
안개 낀 날에는 거미줄에 미세한 물방울이 맺혀 평소보다 훨씬 더 선명하게 보입니다. 샬롯이 왜 이 시점을 택해 메시지를 보여주었는지 짐작할 수 있는 부분입니다.
The words were woven right into the web. They were actually part of the web, Edith.
“글자가 거미줄에 그대로 짜여 있었어요. 이디스, 그건 정말로 거미줄의 일부분이었어요.”
I know, because I have been down there and seen them. It says, ‘Some Pig,’ just as clear as clear can be.
“내가 직접 내려가서 봤으니 확실해요. ‘대단한 돼지’라고 이보다 더 또렷할 수 없을 만큼 분명하게 적혀 있었단 말이에요.”
There can be no mistake about it. A miracle has happened and a sign has occurred here on earth, right on our farm, and we have no ordinary pig.”
“틀림없어요. 기적이 일어났고 우리 농장에 신의 계시가 나타난 거예요. 우리 돼지는 결코 평범한 돼지가 아니라고요.”
“Well,” said Mrs. Zuckerman, “it seems to me you're a little off. It seems to me we have no ordinary spider.”
“글쎄요,” 저커먼 아주머니가 말했어요. “당신이 좀 어떻게 된 거 아니에요? 내 생각엔 우리 거미가 보통 거미가 아닌 것 같은데요.”
저커먼 씨는 거미줄에 적힌 글자를 보고 돼지가 특별하다고 믿지만, 아내인 이디스는 글자를 쓴 거미가 특별하다는 지극히 상식적인 의문을 제기합니다. 두 사람의 시각 차이가 드러나는 흥미로운 대목입니다.
“Oh, no,” said Zuckerman. “It's the pig that's unusual. It says so, right there in the middle of the web.”
“오, 아니에요.” 저커먼 씨가 말했어요. “특별한 건 바로 저 돼지라고요. 거미줄 한가운데에 그렇게 딱 적혀 있잖소.”
“Maybe so,” said Mrs. Zuckerman. “Just the same, I intend to have a look at that spider.”
“그럴지도 모르죠.” 아주머니가 대답했어요. “어쨌든 나도 그 거미를 한번 봐야겠어요.”
“It's just a common grey spider,” said Zuckerman. They got up, and together they walked down to Wilbur's yard.
“그냥 흔하디흔한 회색 거미일 뿐이라니까요.” 저커먼 씨가 말했어요. 두 사람은 자리에서 일어나 함께 윌버의 마당으로 내려갔답니다.
거실에서 대화를 마친 부부가 직접 확인을 위해 다시 윌버의 마당으로 이동하며 장면이 바뀝니다.
“You see, Edith? It's just a common grey spider.” Wilbur was pleased to receive so much attention.
“거 봐요, 이디스. 그냥 평범한 회색 거미일 뿐이죠?” 저커먼 씨가 말했어요. 윌버는 자신에게 쏟아지는 관심이 무척 기뻤답니다.
