Avery found an empty candy box and put his frog in it. The frog seemed tired after his morning in the swing.
에이머리는 빈 사탕 상자를 하나 찾아내어 개구리를 그 안에 넣었어요. 개구리도 오전 내내 그네를 타느라 피곤해 보였지요.
The children walked slowly up toward the barn. They, too, were tired and hardly had energy enough to walk.
아이들은 외양간을 향해 천천히 걸어 올라갔어요. 아이들도 지칠 대로 지쳐서 걸어갈 기운조차 거의 없었거든요.
“Let's build a tree house,” suggested Avery. “I want to live in a tree, with my frog.”
“우리 나무집 짓자.” 에이머리가 제안했어요. “개구리랑 같이 나무 위에서 살고 싶어.”
“I'm going to visit Wilbur,” Fern announced. They climbed the fence into the lane and walked lazily toward the pigpen.
“난 윌버 보러 갈 거야.” 펀이 말했어요. 아이들은 울타리를 넘어 길을 따라 돼지우리 쪽으로 느릿느긋 걸어갔답니다.
산딸기를 다 먹은 아이들이 다시 윌버가 있는 돼지우리 쪽으로 돌아오며 새로운 소동을 예고합니다.
Wilbur heard them coming and got up. Avery noticed the spider web, and, coming closer, he saw Charlotte.
윌버는 아이들이 오는 소리를 듣고 일어났어요. 에이머리는 거미줄을 발견하고 가까이 다가갔다가 샬롯을 보게 되었지요.
“Hey, look at that big spider!” he said. “It's tremendous.” “Leave it alone!” commanded Fern.
“야, 저 커다란 거미 좀 봐!” 에이머리가 말했어요. “정말 엄청나게 큰데.” “그냥 내버려 둬!” 펀이 명령하듯 말했어요.
“You've got a frog—isn't that enough?” “That's a fine spider and I'm going to capture it,” said Avery.
“개구리도 있잖아, 그걸로 충분하지 않아?” “정말 멋진 거미야, 내가 잡을 거야.” 에이머리가 말했어요.
He took the cover off the candy box. Then he picked up the stick.
에이머리는 사탕 상자 뚜껑을 열었어요. 그러고는 막대기 하나를 집어 들었지요.
“I'm going to knock that ol' spider into this box,” he said. Wilbur's heart almost stopped when he saw what was going on.
“저 거미를 쳐서 상자 안으로 떨어뜨릴 거야.” 에이머리가 말했어요. 그 광경을 지켜보던 윌버는 심장이 멎는 것만 같았어요.
This might be the end of Charlotte if the boy succeeded in catching her.
에이머리가 샬롯을 잡는 데 성공한다면, 그건 샬롯의 끝이 될지도 모를 일이었으니까요.
“You stop it, Avery!” cried Fern. Avery put one leg over the fence of the pigpen.
“에이머리, 당장 그만둬!” 펀이 소리쳤어요. 에이머리는 돼지우리 울타리 너머로 다리 하나를 걸쳤답니다.
He was just about to raise his stick to hit Charlotte when he lost his balance.
에이머리가 샬롯을 치려고 막대기를 들어 올리려던 바로 그 순간, 그만 중심을 잃고 말았어요.
