Mr. Zuckerman spied them when he came with Wilbur’s supper. “Well, hello there!” he said, smiling all over.
윌버의 저녁을 챙겨 주러 왔던 저커먼 씨가 그 모습을 발견했어요. “어이쿠, 안녕!” 저커먼 씨가 얼굴 가득 미소를 지으며 말했지요.
“Let’s see... one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Seven baby geese. Now isn’t that lovely!”
“어디 보자... 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯, 여섯, 일곱. 아기 거위가 일곱 마리네. 정말 사랑스럽기도 하지!”
Chapter VII Bad News
제7장 나쁜 소식
아기 거위들의 탄생이라는 경사스러운 분위기가 지나고, 제목 그대로 무거운 소식이 전해질 것임을 예고하며 장면이 전환됩니다.
Wilbur liked Charlotte better and better each day. Her campaign against insects seemed sensible and useful.
윌버는 날이 갈수록 샬롯이 점점 더 좋아졌어요. 벌레들을 없애려는 샬롯의 노력은 참 현명하고 유익해 보였거든요.
Hardly anybody around the farm had a good word to say for a fly. Flies spent their time pestering others.
농장 사람들 중에 파리를 좋게 말하는 사람은 아무도 없었지요. 파리들은 늘 다른 이들을 괴롭히며 시간을 보냈으니까요.
The cows hated them. The horses detested them. The sheep loathed them.
소들도 파리를 싫어했고, 말들도 질색했으며, 양들도 몹시 꺼렸답니다.
Mr. and Mrs. Zuckerman were always complaining about them, and putting up screens.
저커먼 씨 부부도 늘 파리 때문에 불평하며 방충망을 달곤 했지요.
Wilbur admired the way Charlotte managed. He was particularly glad that she always put her victim to sleep before eating it.
윌버는 샬롯의 일 처리 방식에 감탄했어요. 특히 사냥감을 먹기 전에 항상 잠들게 해 주는 모습이 정말 다행이라고 생각했지요.
사냥감을 잠들게 한다는 것은 실제 거미가 독액을 주입해 먹잇감을 마비시키는 과정을 윌버가 나름대로 다정하게 해석한 것입니다.
“It’s real thoughtful of you to do that, Charlotte,” he said.
“샬롯, 그렇게 배려해 주다니 넌 정말 친절한 것 같아.” 윌버가 말했어요.
“Yes,” she replied in her sweet, musical voice, “I always give them an anaesthetic so they won't feel pain. It’s a little service I throw in.”
“그래.” 샬롯이 달콤하고 노래하는 듯한 목소리로 대답했어요. “난 사냥감이 고통을 느끼지 않게 항상 마취를 해 준단다. 이건 내가 덤으로 해 주는 아주 작은 서비스야.”
As the days went by, Wilbur grew and grew. He ate three big meals a day.
날이 갈수록 윌버는 쑥쑥 자라났어요. 하루에 세 번씩 아주 푸짐하게 먹었거든요.
