He glanced at Fern, then crept cautiously toward the goose, keeping close to the wall.
템플턴은 펀을 한번 슥 쳐다보더니 벽을 따라 거위 쪽으로 조심스럽게 기어갔어요.
Everyone watched him, for he was not well liked, not trusted.
모두가 템플턴을 지켜보았답니다. 다들 템플턴을 좋아하지도 않았고 믿지도 않았거든요.
“Look,” he began in his sharp voice, “you say you have seven goslings. There were eight eggs.”
“이봐,” 템플턴이 날카로운 목소리로 입을 열었어요. “아기 거위가 일곱 마리라고 했지. 원래 알은 여덟 개였잖아.”
“What happened to the other egg? Why didn’t it hatch?”
“나머지 알 하나는 어떻게 된 거야? 왜 부화하지 않은 거지?”
“It’s a dud, I guess,” said the goose. “What are you going to do with it?” continued Templeton, his little round beady eyes fixed on the goose.
“아마 불량 알인가 봐.” 거위가 대답했어요. “그 알은 어떻게 할 건데?” 템플턴이 단추 같은 작은 눈으로 거위를 빤히 쳐다보며 계속 물었어요.
dud는 원래 불발탄이나 제대로 작동하지 않는 물건을 뜻하지만, 여기서는 부화하지 못한 알을 비유적으로 표현하고 있습니다.
“You can have it,” replied the goose. “Roll it away and add it to that nasty collection of yours.”
“너나 가져.” 거위가 대답했어요. “굴려서 가져가 버려. 네 그 고약한 수집품 목록에나 보태라고.”
(Templeton had a habit of picking up unusual objects around the farm and storing them in his home. He saved everything.)
(템플턴은 농장 주변에서 특이한 물건들을 주워다가 자기 집에 쌓아 두는 버릇이 있었어요. 무엇이든 가리지 않고 다 모았답니다.)
“Certainly-certainly-certainly,” said the gander. “You may have the egg.”
“그럼, 가져가도 좋아, 좋아, 좋아.” 수거위가 말했어요. “그 알은 네가 가져가렴.”
“But I’ll tell you one thing, Templeton, if I ever catch you poking-oking-oking your ugly nose around our goslings,”
“하지만 템플턴, 한 가지만 말해 두지. 만약 네 그 못생긴 코를 우리 아기 거위들 주변에 들이-들이-들이밀다 걸리기만 해 봐.”
수거위 역시 암거위와 마찬가지로 단어의 뒷부분을 반복하며 말을 더듬는 듯한 독특한 말투를 사용하고 있습니다.
“I’ll give you the worst pounding a rat ever took.”
“쥐가 평생 겪어 본 적 없는 아주 호된 맛을 보여 줄 테니까.”
And the gander opened his strong wings and beat the air with them to show his power.
그러고는 자신의 힘을 과시하려는 듯 튼튼한 날개를 활짝 펴고 허공을 힘차게 내리쳤어요.
He was strong and brave, but the truth is, both the goose and the gander were worried about Templeton.
수거위는 강하고 용감했지만, 사실 거위 부부는 템플턴 때문에 걱정이 이만저만이 아니었답니다.
