After about half an hour looking around the dance club, I finally saw Mary Elizabeth with Peter.
댄스 클럽을 한 30분 정도 둘러본 끝에 드디어 피터 형이랑 같이 있는 메리 엘리자베스를 발견했어.
They were both drinking scotch and sodas, which Peter bought since he is older and had his hand stamped.
둘 다 스카치 소다를 마시고 있었는데, 나이가 많은 피터 형이 손등에 성인 확인 도장을 받고 사 온 거였지.
scotch and soda(스카치 소다)는 스카치 위스키에 탄산수를 섞은 칵테일입니다. 당시 미국 클럽에서는 입구에서 신분증을 확인하고 술을 마실 수 있는 성인임을 나타내는 도장을 손등에 찍어주기도 했습니다.
I congratulated Mary Elizabeth and asked where everybody was.
난 메리 엘리자베스에게 축하 인사를 건네고 다른 애들은 어디 있는지 물어봤어.
She told me that Alice was getting high in the ladies’ room and Sam and Patrick were on the floor dancing.

그래서 난 자리에 앉아 피터 형이랑 메리 엘리자베스가 민주당 후보들에 대해 논쟁하는 걸 들었어.
