“You go, Lily,” he said, seeing his sister, who was much younger—only a Seven—wiggling with impatience in her chair.
“릴리, 네가 먼저 해.” 의자에 앉아 빨리하고 싶어 몸을 움찔거리는 어린 여동생을 보며 조너스가 말했다. 릴리는 이제 겨우 일곱 살이었다.
7살 집단(Sevens)인 릴리는 조너스보다 훨씬 어리기 때문에 감정 표현이 솔직하고 단순한 편입니다.
“I felt very angry this afternoon,” Lily announced.
“오늘 오후에 정말 화가 났어요.” 릴리가 발표하듯 말했다.
“My Childcare group was at the play area, and we had a visiting group of Sevens, and they didn’t obey the rules at all.
“보육 집단이 놀이터에 있었는데, 다른 마을에서 온 일곱 살짜리 집단이 있었거든요. 그런데 걔들은 규칙을 하나도 안 지키는 거예요.”
여기서 말하는 다른 마을(another community)은 조너스가 사는 곳과 비슷하지만 독립적으로 운영되는 또 다른 공동체를 의미합니다.
One of them—a male; I don’t know his name—kept going right to the front of the line for the slide, even though the rest of us were all waiting.
“그중 한 남자애는—이름은 모르겠는데—우리 모두가 기다리고 있는데도 계속 미끄럼틀 맨 앞으로 끼어들지 뭐예요.”
I felt so angry at him. I made my hand into a fist, like this.”
“그 애한테 정말 화가 났어요. 그래서 주먹을 이렇게 꽉 쥐었다니까요.”
She held up a clenched fist and the rest of the family smiled at her small defiant gesture.
릴리가 꽉 쥔 주먹을 들어 올리자, 가족들은 아이의 작고 반항적인 몸짓에 미소를 지었다.
“Why do you think the visitors didn’t obey the rules?” Mother asked. Lily considered, and shook her head.
“왜 방문객들이 규칙을 지키지 않았을 거라고 생각하니?” 어머니가 물었다. 릴리는 곰곰이 생각하다 고개를 저었다.
“I don’t know. They acted like . . like . .” “Animals?” Jonas suggested. He laughed.
“모르겠어요. 꼭... 꼭... 처럼 행동했어요.” “짐승처럼?” 조너스가 거들었다. 그는 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
“That’s right,” Lily said, laughing too. “Like animals.”
“맞아.” 릴리도 같이 웃으며 말했다. “꼭 짐승들처럼요.”
