The Giver went to the wall speaker and clicked the switch to ON. “Yes, Receiver. How may I help you?”

“I will take care of that, sir. Thank you for your instructions,” the voice said.
“알겠습니다, 전달자님. 지시해 주셔서 감사합니다.” 목소리가 대답했다.
“I will take care of that, sir. I will take care of that, sir,” Jonas mimicked in a cruel, sarcastic voice.
“알겠습니다, 전달자님. 알겠습니다, 전달자님.” 조너스가 잔인하고 빈정거리는 투로 그 목소리를 흉내 냈다.
시스템의 무미건조한 응답을 비꼬는 조너스의 태도에서, 체제에 대한 강한 혐오와 환멸이 느껴집니다.
“I will do whatever you like, sir. I will kill people, sir. Old people? Small newborn people?
“원하시는 건 뭐든 할게요, 전달자님. 사람들을 죽일게요. 노인들이요? 아주 작은 신생아들이요?”
I’d be happy to kill them, sir. Thank you for your instructions, sir. How may I help y—” He couldn’t seem to stop.
“기꺼이 죽여드릴게요, 전달자님. 지시해 주셔서 정말 감사합니다. 무엇을 도와드—” 그는 멈출 수가 없는 듯했다.
The Giver grasped his shoulders firmly. Jonas fell silent and stared at him.

“Listen to me, Jonas. They can’t help it. They know nothing.”

“I said it because it’s true. It’s the way they live. It’s the life that was created for them.
“사실이니까 그렇게 말한 거란다. 그게 그들이 살아가는 방식이야. 그들을 위해 만들어진 삶이지.”
It’s the same life that you would have, if you had not been chosen as my successor.”
“네가 내 후계자로 선택되지 않았더라면 너 역시 살게 되었을 똑같은 삶 말이다.”
“But he lied to me!” Jonas wept.
“하지만 아빠는 저를 속였어요!” 조너스가 울음을 터뜨렸다.
