Mr. Pendanski returned with two cartons of orange juice and two bagels.
펜단스키 선생이 오렌지 주스 두 통과 베이글 두 개를 가지고 돌아왔다.
Stanley drank the juice but didn’t feel like eating anything.
스탠리는 주스는 마셨지만, 무엇을 먹고 싶은 기분은 아니었다.
“Wait!” the Warden exclaimed. “I didn’t say they stole the suitcase.
“잠깐만요!” 소장이 외쳤다. “전 이 아이들이 여행 가방을 훔쳤다고 말한 게 아니에요.”
It’s his suitcase, obviously, but he put my things from my cabin inside it.”
“분명히 얘 가방이긴 하지만, 제 오두막에 있던 제 물건들을 그 안에 집어넣었다고요.”
가방에 스탠리의 이름이 적혀 있는 것을 확인하자, 소장은 가방 안에 자신의 물건이 들어 있다는 새로운 억지 주장을 펼치기 시작합니다.
“That isn’t what you said earlier,” said Ms. Morengo. “What’s in the suitcase?” the Warden asked Stanley.
“아까 하신 말씀과는 다르군요.” 모렌고 양이 말했다. “가방 안에 뭐가 들었니?” 소장이 스탠리에게 물었다.
“Tell us what’s in it, then we’ll open it and see!” Stanley didn’t know what to do.
“안에 든 게 뭔지 말해 봐. 그럼 우리가 열어서 확인해 보면 될 거 아냐!” 스탠리는 어찌할 바를 몰랐다.
“Stanley, as your lawyer, I advise you not to open your suitcase,” said Ms. Morengo.
“스탠리, 당신의 변호사로서 충고하는데 가방을 열지 마세요.” 모렌고 양이 말했다.
“He has to open it!” said the Warden. “I have the right to check the personal property of any of the detainees.
“당연히 열어 봐야죠!” 소장이 말했다. “저에겐 수감자들의 개인 소지품을 검사할 권리가 있다고요.”
“How do I know there aren’t drugs or weapons in there? He stole a car, too! I’ve got witnesses!” She was nearly hysterical.
“그 안에 마약이나 무기가 들어 있지 않다는 걸 제가 어떻게 알겠습니까? 게다가 얘는 차도 훔쳤어요! 증인들도 있다니까요!” 그녀는 거의 히스테리 상태였다.
“He is no longer under your jurisdiction,” said Stanley’s lawyer.
“이 아이는 더 이상 당신의 관할이 아닙니다.” 스탠리의 변호사가 말했다.
jurisdiction은 법적인 권한이 미치는 범위인 관할권을 뜻합니다.
“He has not been officially released,” said the Warden. “Open the suitcase, Stanley!”
“아직 공식적으로 석방된 게 아니잖아요.” 소장이 말했다. “스탠리, 가방 열어!”
“Do not open it,” said Stanley’s lawyer. Stanley did nothing.
“열지 마세요.” 스탠리의 변호사가 말했다. 스탠리는 아무것도 하지 않았다.
