He’s been delirious for the last week.” “Why didn’t you release him when she came to you yesterday?” the tall man asked.
“지난 일주일 동안 정신이 오락가락했거든요.” “어제 변호사가 찾아왔을 때 왜 풀어 주지 않은 겁니까?” 키 큰 남자가 물었다.
“She didn’t have proper authorization,” said the Warden. “I had a court order!” “It was not authenticated,” the Warden said.
“정식 승인 서류가 없었거든요.” 소장이 말했다. “법원 명령서가 있었잖아요!” “인증된 게 아니었거든요.” 소장이 말했다.
authenticated는 문서가 법적으로 효력이 있음을 증명하거나 인증받았다는 뜻의 법률 용어입니다.
“Authenticated? It was signed by the judge who sentenced him.”
“인증이라니요? 아이에게 형을 선고한 판사가 직접 서명한 서류였단 말입니다.”
“I needed authentication from the Attorney General,” said the Warden.
“법무부 장관의 인증이 필요했습니다.” 소장이 말했다.
Attorney General은 주 정부의 법률 사무를 관할하는 최고 책임자인 법무부 장관을 뜻합니다.
“How do I know it’s legitimate? The boys in my custody have proven themselves dangerous to society.
“그게 정당한 서류인지 제가 어떻게 압니까? 제가 데리고 있는 아이들은 사회에 위험한 존재라는 사실이 이미 증명되었습니다.”
Am I supposed to just turn them loose any time someone hands me a piece of paper?”
“누가 종이 한 장 내밀 때마다 그냥 아이들을 풀어 주어야 한다는 말씀입니까?”
“Yes,” said the woman. “If it’s a court order.” “Stanley has been hospitalized for the last few days,” the Warden explained.
“네.” 여자가 대답했다. “그게 법원 명령서라면 말이죠.” “스탠리는 지난 며칠 동안 입원 중이었습니다.” 소장이 설명했다.
“He’s been suffering from hallucinations and delirium. Ranting and raving.
“환각과 섬망 증세에 시달렸어요. 횡설수설하면서 말입니다.”
섬망(delirium)은 신체적 질환이나 약물 등으로 인해 의식이 흐려지고 착각이나 환각을 일으키는 상태를 말합니다. 소장이 상황을 모면하기 위해 거짓말을 하고 있군요.
