Stanley nodded, as if he understood. “I want you to know, Stanley, that I respect you,” Mr. Pendanski said.
스탠리는 이해했다는 듯 고개를 끄덕였다. “스탠리, 난 너를 존중한다는 걸 알아줬으면 한다.” 펜단스키 선생님이 말했다.
“I understand you’ve made some bad mistakes in your life. Otherwise you wouldn’t be here.
“네가 살면서 큰 실수를 저질렀다는 건 안다. 그렇지 않았다면 여기 오지 않았겠지.”
But everyone makes mistakes. You may have done some bad things, but that doesn’t mean you’re a bad kid.”
“하지만 누구나 실수는 하는 법이야. 네가 나쁜 짓을 좀 했을지는 몰라도, 그게 네가 나쁜 아이라는 뜻은 아니란다.”
Stanley nodded. It seemed pointless to try and tell his counselor that he was innocent.
스탠리는 고개를 끄덕였다. 상담원에게 자신은 죄가 없다고 말해 봤자 소용없을 것 같았다.
He figured that everyone probably said that. He didn’t want Mr. Pen-dance-key to think he had a bad attitude.
누구나 다 그렇게 말할 거라고 생각했다. 스탠리는 ‘펜-댄스-키’ 선생님이 자신을 문제아라고 생각하게 만들고 싶지 않았다.
스탠리가 선생님의 이름인 Pendanski를 아까 배운 대로 pen, dance, key 세 단어로 나누어 기억하려고 애쓰는 모습입니다.
“I’m going to help you turn your life around,” said his counselor.
“네 인생을 바로잡을 수 있게 내가 도와주마.” 상담원이 말했다.
“But you’re going to have to help, too. Can I count on your help?”
“하지만 너도 도와줘야 한다. 내가 네 도움을 믿어도 되겠니?”
“Yes, sir,” Stanley said. Mr. Pendanski said, “Good,” and patted Stanley on the back.
“네, 선생님.” 스탠리가 대답했다. 펜단스키 선생님은 “좋다.”라고 말하며 스탠리의 등을 토닥여 주었다.
Two boys, each carrying a shovel, were coming across the compound. Mr. Pendanski called to them.
삽을 하나씩 든 소년 두 명이 구내를 가로질러 오고 있었다. 펜단스키 선생님이 그들을 불렀다.
“Rex! Alan! I want you to come say hello to Stanley. He’s the newest member of our team.”
“렉스! 앨런! 이리 와서 스탠리한테 인사해라. 우리 팀의 새 식구란다.”
렉스와 앨런은 스탠리가 앞으로 함께 지내게 될 D 텐트의 동료들입니다.
The boys glanced wearily at Stanley. They were dripping with sweat,
소년들은 지친 기색으로 스탠리를 슬쩍 쳐다보았다. 그들은 온몸이 땀으로 흠뻑 젖어 있었다.
and their faces were so dirty that it took Stanley a moment to notice that one kid was white and the other black.
얼굴이 너무 지저분해서 스탠리는 한 명은 백인이고 다른 한 명은 흑인이라는 사실을 한참 뒤에야 알아차렸다.
