“What are you?” Conor asked, pulling his arms closer around himself.

I am not a “what”, frowned the monster. I am a “who”. “Who are you, then?” Conor said.
“나는 ‘무엇’이 아니다.” 몬스터가 미간을 찌푸리며 대답했다. “나는 ‘누구’다.” “그럼 넌 누군데?” 코너가 되물었다.
몬스터가 자신을 사물이 아닌 인격체(who)로 정의하고 있습니다. 단순한 자연 현상이나 환영이 아닌, 의지를 가진 존재임을 강조하는 대목입니다.
The monster’s eyes widened. Who am I? it said, its voice getting louder. Who am I?
몬스터의 눈이 커졌다. “내가 누구냐고?” 그것의 목소리가 점점 커졌다. “내가 누구냐고!”
The monster seemed to grow before Conor’s eyes, getting taller and broader.
코너의 눈앞에서 몬스터의 몸집이 점점 더 크고 넓게 부풀어 오르는 것 같았다.
A sudden, hard wind swirled up around them, and the monster spread its arms out wide,
갑자기 거센 바람이 두 사람 주위를 휘감았고, 몬스터는 두 팔을 옆으로 활짝 펼쳤다.
so wide they seemed to reach to opposite horizons, so wide they seemed big enough to encompass the world.
그 팔이 너무나 길어 양쪽 지평선 끝까지 닿을 것만 같았고, 세상 전체를 품어버릴 수 있을 만큼 거대해 보였다.
I have had as many names as there are years to time itself! roared the monster.
“나는 시간이 존재한 세월만큼이나 많은 이름을 가지고 있다!” 몬스터가 포효했다.
I am Herne the Hunter! I am Cernunnos! I am the eternal Green Man!
“나는 사냥꾼 헤른이다! 나는 케르눈노스다! 나는 영원한 그린맨이다!”
여기 언급된 사냥꾼 헤른(Herne the Hunter)은 영국 민속 전설 속 인물이고, 케르눈노스(Cernunnos)는 켈트 신화 속 뿔 달린 신, 그린맨(Green Man)은 중세 유럽 건축물에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 자연의 정령입니다. 몬스터가 고대부터 인류와 함께해 온 거대한 자연의 화신임을 보여주는 대목입니다.
A great arm swung down and snatched Conor up in it, lifting him high in the air, the wind whirling around them, making the monster’s leafy skin wave angrily.
거대한 팔 하나가 휙 내려오더니 코너를 낚아채 공중 높이 들어 올렸다. 바람이 그들 주위를 휘몰아치며 몬스터의 나뭇잎 피부를 거칠게 흔들어 놓았다.
Who am I? the monster repeated, still roaring. I am the spine that the mountains hang upon!
“내가 누구냐고?” 몬스터가 여전히 포효하며 되풀이했다. “나는 산맥들이 매달려 있는 척추다!”
I am the tears that the rivers cry! I am the lungs that breathe the wind!
“나는 강물이 흘리는 눈물이다! 나는 바람을 들이마시는 폐다!”
I am the wolf that kills the stag, the hawk that kills the mouse, the spider that kills the fly!
“나는 수사슴을 죽이는 늑대요, 생쥐를 죽이는 매요, 파리를 죽이는 거미다!”
